Sainik School Korukonda is one amongst the 33 Sainik Schools which prepares boys and girls academically, physically and mentally to join National Defence Academy / Indian Naval Academy.
The Alak Appala Kondayamba Vijayaram Palace at Korukonda where the journey of this premier educational institute commenced is a solid tribute to the great service to the cause of education and philanthropic glory of the Royal Family of Vizianagaram.
The Korukonda Palace was built in 1911 by Maharaja Vijayaram Gajapathi Raju as his country residency. The Korukonda Palace was gifted for the purpose of running a Sainik School by Smt. Bhagirathi Devi garu with the consent of her husband ―Sir Vizzy‖ in Sep 1961.
The prime mover of the gift was the great philanthropist and educationist Dr. PVG Raju, Raja Saheb of Vizianagaram and the nephew of Sir Vizzy. As a rich tribute to the philanthropic gesture of the Royal Family,the original crest and motto of the Gajapathis was adopted by the school right from its inception and the Central Hall of the Royal Korukonda Palace, too, has been named after Maharani Lalita Kumari Devi, the mother of Sir Vizzy.
Sainik School Korukonda was formally raised by Cdr Trevor De Almeida, the 1 st Principal of the School on 18 Jan 1962. Maj AP Ganguli was the first Head Master and Lt Cdr A F Crastowas the first Registrar of the school. The first batch of the school commenced with a strength of 205 cadets, 11 academic staff and a set of admin staff. On the historic day of 22 Jan1962, the journey began with the address by the Principal during the first assembly in the palace hall.
The school, spread over sprawling area of 205.20 acres has a beautiful campus with well-laid out roads and buildings. The School started off with four Houses in 1962 and today it has nine houses namely, Pallava, Kakatiya, Maurya, Pandiya, Gajapathi, Chalukya, Moghul and Gupta House for the Boys and Satavahana House for the Girl cadets.
The School also houses military artifacts installed at various places to motivate the cadets. Over the span of 60 years of its journey, 5476 cadets have passed out from the school out of which more than 700 cadets have entered into National Defence Academy and Indian Naval Academy.
The school also lauds to its credit of bagging the Raksha Mantri‘s trophy during the years 1977, 1980, 2001 and 2015 for having sent maximum no of cadets to National Defence Academy and Indian Naval Academy.
The School has very strong alumni called ‘Saikorians’. With the motto of ‘Together for Ever’, the ‘Saikor’ family has been extensively contributing to the growth and welfare of the cadets of the school through various projects.
The school having completed 62 years of service is proudly marching ahead with strength of 587 cadets including the newly inducted girl cadets, lead by a team of three service officers, groomed by 26 academic staff and looked after by 22 administrative staff and 52 General Employees. The School now ranks as one of the best schools in the Country.
